AFRIBANK NIGERIA PLC

Afribank Nigeria Plc has unveiled a strategic development programme that will enhance the productivity of its workforce, accelerate the growth of profits and also enhance a steady increase in the contribution of all subsidiaries.

The bank, which is presently implementing its enterprise rejuvenation programme, is positioned to guarantee better returns in year 2000/2001 onwards. The bank's end- of-year earnings as at 31/3/2001 have shown significant improvement. This has been made possible by the improvements in the operation of the newly re-engineered market-facing directorates.

The bank's management, in conjunction with Andersen Consulting (now Accenture) embarked on the transformation of the bank's operations to improve the quality of its customer service deliveries. The programme tagged the New Enterprise Rejuvenation and Alignment Programme (NEW ERA) saw the implementation of a market-facing strategic business unit concept with services focused on improving the bank's interface with customers and also its internal efficiency.

Following this restructuring, corporate banking, commercial banking, and consumer/retail banking are separate directorates with mandates to give full service to the high, middle and lower end of the financial services market. Marketing and managing customer relationships are the strategic directions of these business units.

The bank is also using the transformation to consolidate its financial supermarket leadership in the market by proving one-stop financial services to all its customers. For example, each branch has been re-engineered and restructured such that at every front office desk, all the financial services provided by the group are made available. The quality of the infrastructure of the bank's entire branch is to be improved. Already, some infrastructures of some branches have been up-graded.

To facilitate the provision of fast and efficient service, the bank has invested heavily in information technology. Eight branches are linked in Lagos and have been connected via VSAT to Abuja and Port Harcourt branches. Branches within Abuja are equally linked. By October, most branches in the North, East and West will be linked via VSAT. Remote places are to be linked via dial-up satellite phones. By the first week of December 2001, 80% of the bank's operations would have been captured under the on-line-real-time service delivery system currently under implementation. This means that a customer in Port Harcourt can transact business in any other major town easily.

Companies with wide area business coverage but which need to consolidate earnings in Lagos, Port Harcourt, or anywhere in the country have already started enjoying this service.

The purpose of re-engineering the bank and its people is to refocus its operations to meet the needs of customers.

The upgrading of service delivery has taken off. Some of the significant changes that will become manifest in the upgraded branches will be their ability to offer on-line-real-time services, drastic reduction in response time, improved internal lay-out/aesthetic external environment, competitive rates and charges and customer driven personnel and procedures.

One of the immediate benefits of the New ERA Project has been the marked improvement in earnings and effective control of cost. The management of the bank in line with the new strategic focus of prudent management of financial resources and physical assets has made tremendous savings in expenses traditionally incurred on the mailing system (which has been automated), medical benefits, and other expenses.

Afribank has also made tremendous strides in the deployment of Valucards. For example, in February 2000, the Bank ranked low among the banks deploying Valucard. Today, it is first among the big banks and number two; overall, in the consortium. Although the bank over the years has performed below its potentials and its peers largely due to the protracted industrial crises the bank had in 1998 and 1999.Following the restoration of industrial harmony, the entire business of the bank was reviewed.

Restructuring the bank and enhancing its equity to give superior returns to shareholders became paramount. One major focus has been the quality of risk assets. To this end, the management embarked on major clean up of risk assets by making full provision for bad and doubtful loans. Indeed, loan losses have been the major cause of the bank's poor profit performance over the years. In the 1999/2000 financial year, because of the clean-up exercise, loan loss provision rose significantly, resulting in a loss position. This has however been reversed as at the financial year end 31st March 2001.

The bank is not only committed to giving shareholders superior profits but also paying dividends from current earnings.
